In an effort to fundraise for and draw awareness to the fight against childhood cancer, the Epsilon chapter participated in the school’s annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon philanthropy, also known as THON. The chapter had 22 members participate in all 46 hours of the dance marathon, and over the course of the entire philanthropy, the chapter and its partner, Volé Dance Company, raised a grand total of $168,290.63. The Epsilon chapter itself raised $74,400 in its fundraising efforts.
Though being part of a 46-hour dance marathon is a feat in and of itself, the true victory comes in supporting a worthwhile cause. All funds are donated to Four Diamonds, an organization dedicated to conquering childhood cancer. The Epsilon chapter and Volé were also paired with two families in need through Four Diamonds, the O’Tooles and the Weinholds.
Fundraising initially started this past summer. The chapter and its partner hosted events such as polar plunge ice baths, craft nights, bonfires, and even a 5K, all with the goal in mind of raising money for the families. These events all culminated in the dance marathon, showing the Epsilon chapter’s dedication to philanthropy and being part of a cause bigger than itself. Chapter President and THON chair, Jackson Dewhurst ‘25, is beyond proud of the work the chapter put in.
“A lot of the guys just care to support everyone else. It’s super big. It’s really the thing I’m the most proud of… not just the fundraising, but the kind of culture change that everyone’s been showing,” Dewhurst said.
The chapter has set a new standard for itself after this event. Last year it raised $36,100, and its all-time fundraising record was $68,000 in 2008. The brothers are proud to have reached new heights, and they’re looking forward to helping more families in the near future.
Special thanks go to Volé for partnering with the Epsilon chapter for this year’s THON. Their collaboration contributed greatly to the success of this philanthropy and showcased the sense of community across Penn State.
