Brother George Jiri Gabera, Wisconsin-Oshkosh '89, a member of Delta Sigma Phi's Epsilon Beta chapter, will be honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh this fall, adding his name to a growing list of Epsilon Beta brothers recognized by their alma mater.

The award will be presented at the UWO Alumni Dinner and Awards Ceremony, held at the Culver Family Alumni Center on the Oshkosh campus on Friday, October 23.

George graduated from UWO in 1992 with a degree in political science. He later added a master's degree in Defense Policy Analysis and National Security Studies from California State University, San Bernardino, in 1997.

That same year, George enlisted in the Navy Reserve, where he was assigned to the USS John C. Stennis. Two years later, he received a direct commission as a Special Duty Intelligence Officer, launching a Navy career that would span the next 25 years across a wide range of assignments and deployments.

George's service has earned him a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

With this honor, George becomes the ninth Epsilon Beta brother to receive a UW-Oshkosh Distinguished Alumni Award. He follows Scott Bucklin (Outstanding Young Alumni Award, 1997), Ron Schreier (Distinguished Alumni Award, 2012), Victor Alatorre (Outstanding Young Alumni Award, 2013), Jerry Gonyo (Service Award, 2020), Chuck Christburg (Distinguished Alumni Award, 2020), Jim Rath (Service Award, 2022), John Close (Distinguished Alumni Award, 2024), and Saravanan "Sud" Shanmugabaskaran (Distinguished Young Alumni Award, 2025) into that select group.
