As the new semester begins, Delta Sigma Phi is excited to share how we are continuing to create safe, supportive, and meaningful experiences for our members. From hazing prevention efforts to new educational initiatives focused on health and wellness topics, we are committed to building a culture of brotherhood that helps every member learn, grow, and thrive. Check out some of the things currently going on in areas of health, wellness, and safety for Delta Sigma Phi:
Each September, fraternities across the country participate in National Hazing Prevention Week (September 22-26). Here at Delta Sigma Phi, we’re not only doing things like raising awareness about our newly-updated hazing policy and taking a strong stance against hazing; we’re also hosting a series of activities designed to help chapters strengthen relationships, foster belonging, and model healthy brotherhood as ways of combating hazing in their brotherhood. Delta Sig’s Build the Brotherhood Week doesn’t focus only on what not to do; our goal is to give members tangible ways to create strong, inclusive, and supportive chapter cultures.
What you can do: Ask your student how their chapter is participating in this week and what brotherhood means to them!
Delta Sigma Phi’s Courage & Culture program suite equips members with tools to make healthy decisions, care for each other, and live the Fraternity’s values. These interactive workshops are led by trained facilitators and cover essential topics for today’s students:
Brotherhood & Belonging - exploring moral reasoning, hazing prevention, and fostering genuine inclusion in chapters
Alcohol & Other Drugs - promoting responsible decision-making and accountability around substance use
Respect in Action - building healthy relationships and practicing respect in everyday interactions
Brothers in Prevention - training on opioid overdose recognition and naloxone (Narcan) use
CARE (Consent & Respect Education) - strengthening consent education and preventing sexual misconduct (new for fall 2025!)
Let’s Talk - peer-led conversations that normalize mental health dialogue and support (new for fall 2025!)
Additionally this fall, six chapters will participate in the inaugural Courage & Culture Chapter Retreat: a weekend of immersive education on brotherhood, health, and wellness. Topics will include responsible alcohol use, conflict management, personal health, and strategies for building stronger communities.
What you can do: Ask your student what kind of education their chapter is providing them about topics that can help them prioritize wellness and build a chapter that is safe and inclusive for all members.
If your student is joining Delta Sigma Phi this academic term, you may be curious about what their new member process will look like. Here are a few key things to know:
Delta Sigma Phi has a strong no-hazing policy: we believe that hazing has no place in our Fraternity and are on a mission to eliminate it from every aspect of the joining process.
The new member process should focus on Delta Sig’s history, values, and membership pillars (Build Relationships, Pursue Education, Launch Careers, Embrace Service). The goal is that every member is given the foundation in the new member process to help them continue learning and growing in these areas throughout their time in the Fraternity.
You can be a support to your student during their new member process! Ask open-ended questions like, “What have you learned about brotherhood so far?” “What traditions or activities have you participated in that have been meaningful?” or “How have you seen your brothers look out for each other?”
Know the signs of concern. If your student seems unusually secretive, exhausted, or uncomfortable about their new member experience, here are a few tips:
1. Start a caring conversation with them, allowing them to share about their experience and not reacting with judgment or shame.
2. Remind them they’re not alone and encourage them to speak up - whether that’s to chapter leaders and advisors, Delta Sigma Phi HQ, or a campus staff member or advisor.
3. Know your reporting options: you can even contact Delta Sig HQ directly if you have questions or concerns.
At Delta Sigma Phi, we believe building brotherhood means more than just friendship: it’s about creating a culture of courage, care, and accountability. Whether through new educational initiatives or family support at home, we are grateful to partner with you in helping our members reach their full potential.
